1970 Chevelle SS 454
Four hundred and fifty-four cubic inches, wearing the badge that says so — in a blue that gives up its depth only under light.
Main street, after rain, with the shops still lit. Photographed in daylight the blue reads electric; under sodium it drops most of a stop of saturation and goes nearly black between the highlights. This is the same paint, correctly lit.
Unique Customs — night photography
This car photographs badly in daylight and beautifully at night, which is a fact about the paint rather than about the photographer. In sun the blue reads electric and sits flat on the panel. Put it under a single warm light and it loses most of a stop of saturation, drops to something close to navy, and holds its highlights as long streaks down the flank instead of a hard sheet of sky. The plate alongside was made at the second of those, deliberately.
Everything visible on it is where Chevrolet put it. Full chrome bumpers, the SS grille, Rally wheels on raised-white-letter tires, stripes over the hood and nothing over the roof. There is no attempt here to make a nineteen-seventy car look like a modern one — a decision that costs nothing to describe and a good deal to carry out.
The sheet below is the shop’s standing spec for a car built to this standard.
